Kansas City Poetry Slam happens every FIRST Wednesday of the month.
RULES OF THE SLAM & FAQ:
How many rounds are there?3 rounds.
First round, 10 poets. Second round 5 poets. 3rd round, 3 poets. One winner will get $50.
Is there a time limit? Poems must me NO LONGER than 3 minutes and 10 seconds. After 3:10, you points will be deducted from your score.
Do I need a different poem for each round?Yes.
Do I need to memorize my poem?Memorization is not necessary.
Can I use props or costumes? There are absolutely no props, costumes, nudity, or music allowed during poems.
How does scoring and judging work? Poets will be judged from 0-10 from 5 random audience members that are chosen the night of.
How do I sign up? 10 poets sign up on the list at 9pm, the night of the slam. The poets who sign up will be drawn at random and the 10 that are drawn are the slammers for the night. In the event that a slammer is not chosen from the basket, they are automatically added to the list for the next month.
Can I sign up ahead of time? No. All participants must sign up the night of the event.
Can I sign up to be a sacrificial poet ahead of time? No. All poets who touch the stage on slam nights will be picked after 9pm the night of the event.
During slam events, points based on the following system will be awarded:
1st place = 5 points
2nd place = 4
3rd place = 3
Everyone else who slams that night = 2
The Slam Season is from September to April. These are the only months in which points are counted. Slams still happen May - August, but there are no points awarded for slamming.
The top 10 poets of the season will compete in the Grand Slam in April. If applicable, the top 5 winners of the Grand Slam will form a team to compete in regionals/nationals. The 1st place winner will receive a trophy.
- The KC Streetcar stops at both 19th (The Crossroads stop) or 16th (The Kauffman Center stop) and folks can walk three blocks East to The Brick. - For folks riding the bus to get to the former Uptown Arts Bar, the MMAX leaves from Main & Armour @ 8:17 p.m. on Wednesdays and arrives at Grand/17th at 8:26 p.m., which is basically The Brick’s front door.
